Word found unreadable content? Diagnose and repair the DOCX

If Word says “Word found unreadable content” or “Word experienced an error trying to open the file”, the file may be damaged — but that second message can also come from permissions, Protected View or Trust Center settings. MakeFileWork checks the DOCX structure first. When the file itself is damaged, it reconstructs recoverable ZIP structure, verifies the OOXML document core and preserves surviving main text without inventing missing content.

What can be repaired safely

A DOCX is a ZIP package containing XML plus media and related parts. If the ZIP directory is damaged, MakeFileWork can rebuild it from verified local records. After that, it checks the Word document core and its internal relationships instead of assuming that a valid ZIP means a valid Word file.

Broken images or headers should not destroy surviving text

If an optional image, header, footer, hyperlink or embedded object is referenced but its target part is already missing, MakeFileWork can remove that broken reference only when the associated document XML can be pruned safely. The main document text is kept. Critical relationships such as styles, numbering, settings, footnotes, endnotes and comments are not guessed away.

What the result means

A high-confidence result means the repaired package has the required OOXML core and the inspected internal Word relationships resolve after conservative cleanup. It does not mean every lost image, style or optional feature can be recreated. Missing content is never fabricated.

Privacy

The current DOCX diagnosis, ZIP reconstruction and structural cleanup run locally in your browser. Your Word document is not uploaded for this repair flow.

Recovery evidence before download: for repaired Word files, MakeFileWork can show a small local text preview and recovered paragraph/character counts before you download the result. The preview is generated in your browser and is not uploaded.
